İsrāʾīliyyāt as Boundary-Marker: Semantic Drift and the Problem of Qurʾānic Reconstruction

Öz

This article reconsiders isrāʾīliyyāt, a category long treated in tafsīr scholarship as a more or less fixed body of Jewish and Christian narrative material. Against that assumption, it argues that isrāʾīliyyāt is better understood as a discursive category that took shape historically and changed in meaning over time. The term recorded more than the provenance of a report. As its range widened from an etymological link with "Israel" to a general designation for heterogeneous late antique traditions, it increasingly governed how that material could be received, cited, and judged. The problem the study addresses is methodological. In current Qurʾānic studies, isrāʾīliyyāt are frequently invoked as evidence for the text's formative environment, yet this usage tends to conflate distinct layers of evidence. Late antique intertexts, early exegetical elaboration, and later polemical containment do not belong to the same epistemic level, and treating them as if they did produces a category mistake. The aim of the article is therefore twofold: to reconstruct the concept history of the term, and to assess whether material so labelled can legitimately serve as a source for reconstructing the Qurʾān. Existing scholarship has tended either to dismiss isrāʾīliyyāt on the basis of a modern rhetoric of purity, or to use them, just as uncritically, as direct background to the Qurʾān, and neither approach attends to the work the label itself performs. By historicizing the category, the article shows that once a report is marked as isrāʾīliyyāt, it is pre-framed as foreign or suspect before any examination of its content, so that the term functions less as a bibliographical tag than as a boundary marker regulating interpretive legitimacy. Methodologically, the study combines concept-historical analysis with close reading. It traces the gradual consolidation of the term from roughly the fourth/tenth century onward and its hardening into an instrument of doctrinal control in later scholarship. A comparative case study of the Adam narrative, read alongside Syriac Christian literature such as the Cave of Treasures, then shows how exegetical traditions handle the reserve of the Qurʾānic text. While the Qurʾān describes the episode with notable semantic restraint, later interpretation often relocates it within a more determinate narrative of shame, concealment, and lost primordial glory drawn from the surrounding late-antique world. The study concludes that the value of isrāʾīliyyāt for scholarship lies in illuminating the history of Qurʾānic interpretation rather than in disclosing the sources of the Qurʾān itself. Used with critical awareness, the category requires a careful distinction between three levels that are easily confused: the late antique intertextual horizon, the exegetical strategies through which later scholars stabilised meaning, and the normative discourses that sought to police its boundaries. Only such differentiation permits a methodologically controlled use of the term in contemporary Qurʾānic studies.
