The concurrent developments that took place since 1989 have had a profound
effect on Turkey's thinking about its role in the post-cold war period.
It is in this context that Turkey has begun to be discussed as a pole of attraction
and stability for the Central Asian republics with which it shares linguistic, cultural,
religious and ethnic traditions
