Embodied Media and Colonial Power in Ken Liu’s “The Paper Menagerie” and Octavia Butler’s “Bloodchild”

This study argues that Ken Liu’s “Paper Menagerie” and Octavia Butler’s “Bloodchild” reimagine colonial relationships through intermedial communication, where material and bodily media, origami, and reproductive rituals become sites of both domination and resistance. By reading these two speculative fiction short stories the former is fantastic the latter is science fiction through Homi Bhabha’s concept of hybridity, the research reveals how speculative fiction transforms postcolonial identity into an embodied, intermedial process of survival and agency. This study adopts the concept of intermediality as a methodological framework to analyse how the material and bodily media elements, particularly reproductive practices and paper art in these stories function as a communication interface between hegemonic authority and secular communities. Drawing on Gayatri Spivak’s notion of subaltern agency, the analysis situates these intermedial forms within postcolonial dynamics of power, resistance, and identity. In “Paper Menagerie”, the mother’s origami animals, representing a cultural medium, protect marginalized histories and resist assimilation, revealing how colonial ideology fractures identity through linguistic loss, racialized shame, and the erasure of minority culture. In “Bloodchild”, the human body becomes a medium of colonial influence, where reproductive rituals symbolize the internalization of dominance, but also offer space for negotiation, autonomy, and redefined survival. Applying postcolonial theory in the light of intermedial studies, the research demonstrates how speculative fiction displays the subtle, indirect mechanism of colonial power and how the characters resist these difficulties through bodily, material, and symbolic forms of communication.

Ken Liu’nun 'The Paper Menagerie' ve Octavia Butler’ın 'Bloodchild' Eserlerinde Somutlaşan Medya ve Sömürgeci Güç

Öz

Bu çalışma, Ken Liu’nun The Paper Menagerie ve Octavia Butler’ın Bloodchild adlı eserlerinin, sömürge ilişkilerini intermedial iletişim aracılığıyla yeniden kurguladığını ileri sürmektedir; burada maddi ve bedensel medya, yani origami ve üreme ritüelleri, hem tahakkümün hem de direnişin alanları hâline gelir. Bu metinler, Homi Bhabha’nın melezlik kavramı çerçevesinde ele alındığında, spekülatif kurmacanın postkolonyal kimliği bedenselleşmiş ve intermedial bir hayatta kalma ve özneleşme sürecine dönüştürdüğü ortaya konmaktadır. Çalışma, intermedialiteyi kuramsal bir modelden ziyade metodolojik bir çerçeve olarak benimsemekte (Elleström, 2021; Wolf, 2011) ve kâğıt sanatı ile üreme pratikleri gibi maddi ve bedensel medyanın hegemonik otorite ile marjinalleştirilmiş topluluk arasında nasıl birer iletişim arayüzü işlevi gördüğünü incelemektedir. Gayatri Spivak’ın madun özneleşmesi kavramından hareketle, analiz bu intermedial biçimleri postkolonyal güç, direniş ve kimlik dinamikleri içinde konumlandırır. The Paper Menagerie’de annenin origami hayvanları, kültürel bir medya olarak, marjinalleştirilmiş tarihleri korur ve asimilasyona direnir; böylece sömürge ideolojisinin kimliği dilsel kayıp, ırksallaştırılmış utanç ve azınlık kültürünün silinmesi yoluyla nasıl parçaladığını açığa çıkarır. Bloodchild’da ise insan bedeni, sömürgesel etkinin bir medyası hâline gelir; burada üreme ritüelleri, tahakkümün içselleştirilmesini simgelerken aynı zamanda müzakere, özerklik ve yeniden tanımlanmış bir hayatta kalma alanı da sunar. Postkolonyal kuramı intermedial çalışmalar ışığında uygulayan bu araştırma, spekülatif kurmacanın sömürgeci gücün örtük ve dolaylı işleyiş mekanizmalarını görünür kıldığını ve karakterlerin bu baskılara bedensel, maddi ve simgesel iletişim biçimleri aracılığıyla nasıl direndiklerini ortaya koymaktadır.
