The Role of Plastic Surgery in the Emergency Department: Injury Profiles and Treatment Approaches

Introduction: Emergency departments are critical units that serve a wide range of patients requiring consultations from different specialties. Plastic surgery is a branch frequently consulted in cases such as trauma, burns, facial, and extremity injuries. In this study, the demographic and clinical characteristics, types of injuries, and intervention outcomes of patients who required plastic surgery consultation in the emergency department were evaluated. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 864 patients who presented to the Emergency Department of Balıkesir University Faculty of Medicine and required plastic surgery consultation between January 2020 and January 2025. Demographic data, reasons for admission, mechanisms of injury, and surgical interventions performed were obtained from hospital records and analyzed using SPSS software. Findings: 73% of the patients were male, and the most common reasons for admission were fractures (27.1%), soft tissue injuries (24.7%), and tissue loss (14.1%). The most common mechanisms of injury were falls (17.3%) and traffic accidents (12.9%). While 60.6% of the patients were discharged, 22.5% were hospitalized. Result: Cases requiring a plastic surgery consultation in the emergency department are generally caused by traumatic injuries. Early intervention is critically important in terms of functional and aesthetic outcomes. Keywords: Plastic surgery, emergency department, traumatic injuries

Acil Serviste Plastik Cerrahinin Rolü: Yaralanma Profilleri ve Tedavi Yaklaşımları

Giriş: Acil servisler, farklı uzmanlık alanlarından konsültasyon gerektiren geniş bir hasta grubuna hizmet veren kritik birimlerdir. Plastik cerrahi, travmalar, yanıklar, yüz ve ekstremite yaralanmaları gibi durumlarda sıkça başvurulan bir branştır. Bu çalışmada, acil serviste plastik cerrahi konsültasyonu istenen hastaların demografik ve klinik özellikleri, yaralanma türleri ve müdahale sonuçları değerlendirildi. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu retrospektif çalışma, Ocak 2020-Ocak 2025 arasında Balıkesir Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Acil Servisi’ne başvuran ve plastik cerrahi konsültasyonu gerektiren 864 hasta üzerinde gerçekleştirildi. Demografik veriler, başvuru nedenleri, yaralanma mekanizmaları ve yapılan cerrahi müdahaleler hastane kayıtlarından elde edilerek SPSS yazılımında analiz edildi. Bulgular: Hastaların %73’ü erkek olup en sık başvuru nedenleri kırıklar (%27,1), yumuşak doku yaralanmaları (%24,7) ve doku kaybı (%14,1) idi. En yaygın yaralanma mekanizması düşmeler (%17,3) ve trafik kazaları (%12,9) olarak belirlendi. Hastaların %60,6’sı taburcu edilirken, %22,5’i hastaneye yatırıldı. Sonuç: Acil serviste plastik cerrahi konsültasyonu gerektiren vakalar genellikle travmatik yaralanmalardan kaynaklanmaktadır.
