Urinary Incontinence After HoLEP: A Bibliometric Analysis (2001–2025)

Aim: Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) is an effective surgical therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), yet postoperative urinary incontinence (UI) remains a notable complication. The objective of this study was to undertake a bibliometric analysis of the extant literature on UI following HoLEP, with a view to identifying research trends and key contributors. Material and Methods: A comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection was conducted for publications related to HoLEP and UI from 2001 to 2025. A comprehensive set of bibliometric data was extracted, including publication counts, countries of origin, authorship information, citation metrics, and keyword usage. Keyword co-occurrence patterns were analyzed using VOSviewer. Results: A total of 50 publications (2010–2025) were identified. Annual output was low until a marked increase occurred after 2015, peaking at 15 publications in 2024. The United States, Germany, and Japan contributed the most studies. No dominant author was identified. Frequently used keywords included HoLEP, urinary incontinence, and risk factors, indicating focus on incidence and predictors. Foundational studies from 2010–2015 were highly cited, while recent publications have gained attention rapidly. Conclusions: Although transient UI affects a minority of HoLEP patients, most regain continence within months, and long-term incontinence is reported in only approximately 1% of cases. This reflects a substantial and growing global research interest, as demonstrated by the existing literature. In order to reduce post-HoLEP UI and optimise patient outcomes, further international efforts are required. These efforts must include the standardisation of outcome definitions and the execution of high-quality trials.

Holmiyum Lazer Enükleasyonu Prostat (HoLEP) Sonrası Üriner İnkontinans: Bibliyometrik Bir Analiz (2001–2025)

Öz

Amaç: Holmium Lazer Enükleasyonu (HoLEP), benign prostat hiperplazisi (BPH) için etkili bir cerrahi tedavi yöntemidir; ancak ameliyat sonrası idrar kaçırma (UI) önemli bir komplikasyon olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, HoLEP sonrası UI ile ilgili mevcut literatürün bibliyometrik analizini yaparak araştırma eğilimlerini ve öne çıkan katkı sağlayıcıları belirlemektir. Gereç ve Yöntemler: 2001–2025 yılları arasında HoLEP ve UI ile ilişkili yayınlar için Web of Science Core Collection veri tabanında kapsamlı bir tarama yapılmıştır. Yayın sayıları, ülkeler, yazar bilgileri, atıf metrikleri ve anahtar kelime kullanımı dâhil olmak üzere ayrıntılı bibliyometrik veriler elde edilmiştir. Anahtar kelime eş-oluşum analizleri VOSviewer programı kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bulgular: Toplam 50 yayın (2010–2025) tespit edilmiştir. Yıllık yayın sayısı 2015 yılına kadar düşük seyretmiş, bu tarihten sonra belirgin bir artış göstermiş ve 2024 yılında 15 yayın ile zirveye ulaşmıştır. En fazla katkı sağlayan ülkeler Amerika Birleşik Devletleri, Almanya ve Japonya’dır. Belirgin şekilde baskın bir yazar saptanmamıştır. En sık kullanılan anahtar kelimeler HoLEP, idrar kaçırma ve risk faktörleri olup, çalışmaların insidans ve öngörücüler üzerine yoğunlaştığını göstermektedir. 2010–2015 yılları arasındaki temel çalışmalar yüksek atıf almışken, son yıllardaki yayınların da hızla ilgi gördüğü gözlemlenmiştir. Sonuç: Geçici idrar kaçırma HoLEP hastalarının azınlığını etkilese de, çoğu hasta birkaç ay içinde kontinansını yeniden kazanmaktadır ve uzun dönemli idrar kaçırma oranı yaklaşık %1 olarak bildirilmektedir. Mevcut literatür, bu alanda küresel ölçekte artan ve kayda değer bir araştırma ilgisini yansıtmaktadır. HoLEP sonrası idrar kaçırmayı azaltmak ve hasta sonuçlarını optimize etmek için, sonuç tanımlarının standardizasyonunu ve yüksek kaliteli çalışmaların yürütülmesini içeren uluslararası iş birliği gereklidir.
