Frequency of Peripheral Intravenous Catheter-Related Complications and Influencing Factors in Hospitalized Adult Patients.

Öz

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and influencing factors of complications associated with peripheral intravenous catheterization in adult patients. Material and Method: This descriptive, cross-sectional, and observational study was conducted with 303 patients who agreed to participate in the research between December 2025 and February 2026. Data were collected using the “Sociodemographic Data Form” and the “PIVC Application and Potential Complication Monitoring Form”. Analyses included means, standard deviations, percentages, chi-square for intergroup comparisons, and Pearson correlation analysis to determine relationships between peripheral intravenous catheter-related complications and influencing factors. Results: In this study, the mean age of the patients was 59. Thrombophlebitis was found in 16.5% of patients who underwent peripheral intravenous catheterization. While a low-level positive correlation was found between catheter care and pain and thrombophlebitis development, a strong positive correlation was found between pain and thrombophlebitis development (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study determined that patients' age, catheter care, catheter placement duration, and medications used significantly affected the frequency of complications associated with peripheral intravenous catheters.

Hastanede Yatan Yetişkin Hastalarda Periferik İntravenöz kataterle İlişkili Komplikasyonların Görülme Sıklığı ve Etkileyen Faktörler

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, yetişkin hastalarda periferik intravenöz kateterizasyonla ilişkili komplikasyonların sıklığını ve etkileyen faktörlerini belirlemektir. Materyal ve Yöntem: Bu tanımlayıcı, kesitsel ve gözlemsel çalışma, Aralık 2025 ile Şubat 2026 tarihleri ​​arasında araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 303 hasta ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler, “Sosyodemografik Veri Formu” ve “PIVC Uygulama ve Potansiyel Komplikasyon İzleme Formu” kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Analizler, ortalamalar, standart sapmalar, yüzdeler, gruplar arası karşılaştırmalar için ki-kare testi ve periferik intravenöz kateterle ilişkili komplikasyonlar ile etkileyen faktörler arasındaki ilişkileri belirlemek için Pearson korelasyon analizini içermiştir. Sonuçlar: Bu çalışmada hastaların ortalama yaşı 59'dur. Periferik intravenöz kateterizasyon uygulanan hastaların %16,5'inde tromboflebit saptanmıştır. Kateter bakımı ile ağrı ve tromboflebit gelişimi arasında düşük düzeyde pozitif bir korelasyon bulunurken, ağrı ile tromboflebit gelişimi arasında güçlü bir pozitif korelasyon bulunmuştur (p<0,05). Sonuç: Çalışma, hastaların yaşı, kateter bakımı, kateter yerleştirme süresi ve kullanılan ilaçların periferik intravenöz kateterlerle ilişkili komplikasyonların sıklığını önemli ölçüde etkilediğini belirlemiştir.
