Social Networks and Written Competence in French as a Foreign Language: The Case of University Students
Öz
The rapid development of digital technologies has profoundly transformed young people's communication practices, particularly through the use of social networks. These new spaces of exchange have given rise to distinctive forms of writing marked by graphic simplification, abbreviation, and various spelling transformations. This study examines the influence of Facebook on the writing practices of French-language students at the University of Blida 2 (Algeria). The research draws on a survey of twenty (20) students aged 18 to 23, using a questionnaire on their Facebook habits, the writing procedures they use in digital exchanges, and the possible impact of these practices on their academic written production. The findings show that Facebook is a preferred communication space for students and contributes to the emergence of new graphic forms, particularly abbreviations and word reductions. The study also reveals that these digital practices are sometimes transferred to academic writing, leading to spelling errors or deviations from academic writing norms. However, students appear aware of the need to distinguish digital writing from academic writing. Social networks thus emerge as a factor shaping contemporary writing practices without necessarily posing a threat to written language. Rather, they constitute a new space of expression that calls for writing skills to be adapted according to the communication context.
