An Evaluation on the Different Meaning Preferences Given to the Expressions “يَعِدُكُم” in Turkish Translations of al-Baqarah 2/268
Öz
This study aims to examine the different meaning preferences adopted in Qur’anic translation for the expressions (يَعِدُكُم), which occur twice in al-Baqarah 2/268 with reference to different fāʿil, and to reveal the linguistic bases of these preferences as well as their relationship with the interpretations found in the tafsīr literature. In the relevant verse, the fāʿil of the expression (يَعِدُكُم) is first Satan and then Allah. Accordingly, using the document analysis method, the differences in the translation of the expression in Turkish Qur’an translations were identified, and the rationales underlying the different translation choices were evaluated in light of explanations found in dictionaries and tafsir literatüre. An examination of the Turkish translations shows that when the fāʿil of the verb is Satan, the expression (يَعِدُكُم) is generally rendered as “frightens you or threatens you” whereas when the fāʿil is Allah, it is translated as “promises you”. Considering the generally accepted principle that, in order to preserve semantic coherence and translational consistency, identical expressions occurring within the same context should be rendered in a similar manner, it becomes important to determine the grounds on which a verb repeated within the same verse has been translated differently. The findings indicate that one reason for these different translation choices is the interpretation of the verse in relation to the preceding verse. In the preceding verse, Allah commands believers to spend (infāq) from the good portions of what they have earned, while the mufassirūn explain that Satan instils into people's hearts the thought that they will become poor if they spend from these possessions. Another important reason is that the second objects (mafʿūl) of the two verbs are different. Whereas Satan promises poverty, Allah promises forgiveness. Although Arabic lexicons state that the verb waʿada may be used with reference to both good and evil, the literal rendering “promises poverty” does not accord with the natural usage of Turkish, since the word vaat generally carries a positive meaning. For this reason, many Turkish Qur’an translators have preferred to render the expression as “Satan frightens you with poverty.” Thus, what may at first glance appear to be a case of translational inconsistency is, in fact, a consequence of the usage characteristics of words in the target language. Accordingly, the study concludes that expressions repeated within the same context cannot always be translated in a similar manner, as different linguistic and contextual considerations may justify different translation choices.

Bakara 2/268.
