EXAMINING NURSES’ PATIENT HANDOVERS BETWEEN SHIFTS USING THE SBAR TECHNIQUE: A QUALITATIVE CASE ANALYSIS

The purpose of this study is to determine the practices and opinions of nurse managers regarding the SBARR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation, Read Back or Response) technique, which is used for intershift patient handovers and to structure communication.
The population of this descriptive, cross-sectional study consisted of 20 charge nurses working in the inpatient wards of a private hospital in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey between March 15 and June 15, 2025. The SBARR technique is used in handovers.
The sample included all charge nurses who volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected through focus group interviews based on the literature review, "Examination of Patient Handovers Using the SBARR Technique." Content analysis was used to create themes in the analysis of the qualitative data obtained from the interviews.
The average age of the participating nurses was between 25 and 45, and 80% were female and 25% had a bachelor's degree. The hospital has two shifts: 7:30-7:30 PM and 7:30-7:30 PM. It has been reported that patient handovers are mostly performed verbally at the bedside, 100% recorded, and the SBARR technique is used for 100% of the time.
It can be said that almost all nurses believe patient handover is important and have a positive patient safety culture. Furthermore, due to the necessity of using SBARR as a standard handover form, the following themes emerged from the interviews with the responsible nurses: "Recording and accessing information for patient safety, Educating role, Strengthening communication with teammates, Contributing to rapid and orderly handover."
