A STUDY ON AN ACTIVITY BASED WORD TEACHING METHOD’S REFLECTIONS ON THE SEMANTIC DEPHT OF THE WORDS USED IN THE WRITTEN EXPRESSIONS OF 6TH GRADE STUDENTS

Abstract

This study was conducted to analysis the effects of teaching with Word-Based technique on the process of developing secondary school students’ vocabulary by using, the “pre-test post-test control group design as a quasi-experimental study method”. The research was carried out with 2 experimental groups and 2 control groups, from high and low quality schools. At the beginning of the process, students were given writing tasks as a pre-test to evaluate their vocabulary. After the students’ vocabularies have been identified by using the pre-test, 12 different activities compatible with their learning strategies were developed and implemented. At the end of the implementation process, a post-test was applied to evaluate the development of vocabulary. The data obtained from the written expressions of students were transferred to computer environment and then text repositories were created and words were aligned according to their frequency of occurrence by using simple concordance 4.07. Since the first 100 words on the list are very important with regards to the whole list, meanings of first 100 words of each group were identified according to Turkish Dictionary by taking their contexts into consideration. These lists identified how often the students used the words (more or less) as part of their vocabulary. Results showed that, there’s been a significant increase in the use of different words, total number of the words and their varieties in meanings, both in the high and low quality schools’ study group. Findings show that these word teaching methods are more effective than traditional methods in terms of the development of vocabulary
