ASSESSMENTS OF INCLUSION PRATICES BY GENERAL EDUCATION TEACHERS

Abstract

This study aims analyzing the assessment of inclusion elements such as educational environment, school management and guidance counsellor and self-assessment by general education teachers who are involved in inclusive education. In this descriptive study, questionnaires have been applied to 1500 general education teachers who attended the 30 hours special education seminar organized by Department of In-Service Training in the Directorate General for Primary Education in the Ministry of National Education in 2008-2009 school year. Outcomes of the study reveal that educational environments are not suitable for inclusion practices; that teachers admit inclusion students into their classes and show a positive attitude towards inclusion practices, however neither general education teachers themselves nor school managers have adequate knowledge concerning inclusion, Individual Education Programs (IEP) and types of disability; and that school managers and guidance counsellors fail to take required steps for inclusion practices. As a conclusion, it is considered that findings obtained can play a guiding role in translating the inclusion practices the legal ground of which has already been in place into effective and functional practices, in defining problems experienced by the relevant stuff who work with the said students and taking required measures accordingly, in making required adjustments in the relevant legislation, in preparing the in-service training programs and in producing effective solutions.
