OPINIONS STUDENT ABOUT THE VIEWS OF

Abstract

The purpose of student-centered instruction that has been adopted by the Ministry of National Education of Turkey is to help students develop self-learning skills. In this model students should be able to explore their skills, evaluate themselves and express their ideas. In a school in which student-centered instruction is used, portfolio assessment is an important evaluation technique that shows students’ learning development process. Until recently, educators have used psychometric evaluation approaches that focus on the product and impressionist approach that focuses on the process. However, portfolio assessment with an eclectic approach, proposed as an alternative evaluation technique, focuses on both products and processes. The purpose of this study is to investigate 5th and 8th grade students’ views and perspectives on portfolio assessment. Based on a statistical analysis, it was found in this study that students believe that portfolios should be used for measurement and evaluation of students’ skills and help students discover their own learning style. On the other hand, students complained that preparing portfolios consumes much time. Eight grade students indicated that they do not have much time to prepare for national standardized tests because of preparing portfolios.
