PRIMARY STUDENT TEACHERS’ UNDERSTANDING LEVELS AND MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGE
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to determine primary student teachers’ levels of
understanding and misconceptions about physical and chemical change concepts. With this
aim, a test that consists of 10 items were developed and implemented to 100 student
teachers from the division of the primary teacher-training program at their third year at KTU.
In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 student teachers. The
results from this study showed that while the primary student teachers’ were successful in
labeling phenomena given as the physical change or the chemical change, they were not
sufficient successful in explaining the reasons of these phenomena. Moreover, they had
erroneous conceptions about the concepts studied. Some suggestions were made based
on the results.
