Covid-19 Process in Architecture Studio Education: 'Touchless Experiences'

Abstract

Studio education is at the center of architectural education. Students take part in a production process using various materials and techniques and develop their products as a result of mutual discussions. For this reason, "contact" is very important in the communication that students establish with the instructors or among themselves during the studio training. The touch action, which gained a disturbing feature with the COVID-19 epidemic, led to the development of new methods in daily life. In the education system, the online education model is applied as a new method. In the content of the study, a literature review has been made within the framework of studio education in architecture and the importance of touching in the communication and perception process. In this study, the "non-contact" architectural studio training experience, realized with the possibilities of the online model, separated from the spaces physically interacted due to the epidemic, was discussed. The 'Touchless Experiences' experienced showed how important it is to be together physically in architectural education, but also revealed the role of space in education. In this context, it was concluded that the online education model, which also has various positive effects, causes deficiencies in studio training.
