Spinoza and the Aesthetics of Freedom

Öz

This paper argues that, despite Spinoza’s explicit rejection of teleology and of aesthetic concepts such as beauty, his philosophy allows for a reconstruction of aesthetics grounded in the notion of power. By drawing an analogy with Spinoza’s treatment of moral values, I show that aesthetic concepts, though anthropocentric and non-objective, retain a legitimate role within a reflective account of human life. Against mechanistic readings, the paper defends a dynamical interpretation of Spinoza’s ontology centered on conatus as active striving. Within this framework, imagination, when guided by reason, can be understood as an expression of human activity rather than mere inadequacy. Art is thus interpreted as a domain in which human beings express and recognize their power of acting. Accordingly, beauty is redefined not as an objective property, but as the sensible manifestation of human freedom.
