Çiftlerin gebelik elde edememeleri olarak karşımıza çıkan infertilite; üreme fonksiyonlarının yetersizliği, ürogenital hastalıklar ve açıklanamayan sebeplerden kaynaklanabilmektedir. İnfertilite oranlarında meydana gelen artış tedavi seçeneklerinin ortaya çıkmasıyla birlikte infertilite nedenlerinin de sorgulanmasına yol açmıştır. Erkek faktörüyle ilgili tanıda kullanılan en önemli yöntem olan sperm analizi, fertilizasyonda etkili olan spermin motilite, sayı ve morfolojisini bizlere net bir şekilde göstermektedir. Spermin morfoloji değerlendirmesi için Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO) ile Kruger kriterleri en yaygın kullanılanlardır. Spermin morfolojisinde baş, boyun, orta parça, kuyruk defektleri meydana gelebilmektedir. Sperm başına ait morfolojik anomaliler motilite, akrozom reaksiyonu ve fertilizasyon kabiliyetlerinde yetersizlikler ve kusurlara neden olarak infertiliteye sebebiyet vermektedir. Fertilizasyon oranı için normal sperm morfolojisi mükemmel bir belirleyicidir. Baş defektlerine sahip spermlerin sahip olabileceği kromozal anomaliler nedeniyle ICSI gibi yöntemlerle elde edilebilecek gebeliklerde abortus ve anomalili çocuk doğumların gerçekleşebileceği düşünülmektedir. Bu nedenle sperm hücrelerindeki morfolojik defektlerin dikkatli bir şekilde iyi tayin edilmesi, IVF uygulamalarında tercih edilmemeleri gerekmektedir

Infertility is the status of the couples who cannot achieve the pregnancy that can be due to the insufficiency of thereproductive functions, urogenital diseases as well as unexplained reasons. The increment occurred in the infertility rate has led to the questioning of infertility with also the emergence of treatment options. Sperm analysis is the most important technique that is used for the diagnosis related to the man and it shows clearly the motility, amount and the morphology of the sperm that is important in fertilization. WHO (World Health Organization) and Kruger criteria are the most common ones in order to evaluate the morphology of the sperm. There can be the head, neck, middle piece, tail defects that can occur with respect to the sperm morphology. The abnormalities related to the head of the sperm can lead to the infertility due to the inadequacies and imperfections of its motility, acrosome reaction and fertilization ability. Normal sperm morphology is a perfect indicator of the fertilization rate. It has been thought that the pregnancies that are created by using techniques such as ICSI can lead to the abortion and birth of an abnormal infant due to the chromosomal abnormalities of sperms with head defects. Therefore, morphological defects of the sperm cells should be well determined, and they should not be used in IVF applications
