Ottomans and the Supernatural: Nature and the Limits of Knowledge in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire: Marinos Sariyannis, Oxford University Press, 2025. 314 pp.: ISBN 9780198954774
Öz
Marinos Sariyannis’s book examines the relationship between nature, the supernatural, and occult knowledge in the early modern Ottoman world. Its central claim is that no sharp modern distinction separated nature from the supernatural, and that practices such as magic, astrology, alchemy, talismans, and miracles were often treated as legitimate knowledge in intellectual circles. Apart from the introduction and conclusion, the book has three main sections. The first discusses conceptions of jinn, demons, and spiritual beings; the second analyzes the theoretical foundations, legitimacy debates, and social circulation of magic, occult sciences, and divination; the third explores natural knowledge.
