A Nursing Care of a Patient with a Chest Tube

Yıl 2026, Cilt: 2 Sayı: 1, 41 - 48, 29.01.2026

Öz

Chest tube application after surgical intervention is an invasive drainage system placed into the thoracic cavity to prevent the accumulation of air, fluid, and blood in the mediastinal or pleural spaces, and to maintain hemodynamic balance and cardiopulmonary function. This drainage system is frequently used in conditions such as hemothorax, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and empyema. The tube ensures the drainage of blood, fluid, and air under sterile conditions. One of the nurse's primary responsibilities is to prevent complications in patients with a chest tube, ensure the tube functions effectively, and enhance patient comfort. Patients with a chest tube, which is commonly used in clinical practice, require close monitoring by nurses. Key elements of nursing care include monitoring the water level in the chest tube drainage system, observing drainage characteristics, recording the amount of drainage, monitoring the content of the drainage and checking for air leaks, ensuring the drainage system is functioning properly, preventing infection, managing pain, educating the patient and their family about the care process, and preventing and early detecting potential complications. The aim of this review is to comprehensively examine current practices in the care of patients with a chest tube in light of the literature, emphasizing the importance of nursing care and providing evidence-based care.
