RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NURSING DEPARTMENT STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING TENDENCIES AND THEIR THOUGHTS ON PROBLEM SOLVING
Öz
Aim: The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between nursing students' critical thinking dispositions and their thoughts about problem solving.
Materials and Methods: The universe of this descriptive and correlational type of research consisted of 520 students studying in the nursing department of a university. The study did not involve sample selection and 361 students who volunteered to participate in the study and met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Data were collected using the socio-demographic characteristics form, the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale, and the Problem Solving Thoughts Scale. Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test and Spearman correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data.
Results: The mean score of the students' Critical Thinking Disposition Scale is 193.50±30.29 (min: 68, max: 245) and the mean score of the Problem Solving Thoughts Scale is 99.13±12.76 (min: 53, max: 138). A significant difference was found between the grades in which the students studied and the mean scores of the Critical Thinking Tendency Scale and its sub-dimensions (p<0.05). A significant difference was found between the students' income status, university-weighted general grade point averages, article reading status, and the Critical Thinking Tendency Scale and Systematicity, Flexibility sub-dimensions mean scores (p<0.05). A significant difference was found between the students' gender and the mean scores of the Execution and Evaluation sub-dimensions of the Problem Solving Thoughts Scale (p<0.05). A significant difference was found between the students' grades and the mean scores of the Problem Solving Thoughts Scale and the Planning and Execution sub-dimensions (p<0.05). A strong positive relationship (r: 0.66; p: 0.00) was found between the students' Critical Thinking Tendencies and their Thoughts on Problem Solving.
Conclusion: It was determined that the students who participated in the study had above average scores on the Critical Thinking Tendency Scale and the Problem Solving Thoughts Scale, and that there was a strong relationship between the students' Critical Thinking Tendency and their Thoughts on Problem Solving.
