Global Research Trends on the Spinothalamic Tract: A Bibliometric Analysis (2000–2024)
Öz
Abstract This study aimed to analyze global publication trends, international collaboration networks, major research themes, and emerging topics related to spinothalamic tract research using bibliometric methods. Data were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database. English-language publications published between 2000 and 2024 were identified using the keyword “spinothalamic tract.” Original research articles and reviews were included, while editorials, conference abstracts, and book chapters were excluded. Bibliometric analyses were conducted using Bibliometrix/Biblioshiny and VOSviewer software. Publication trends, collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence, thematic maps, and Bradford’s and Lotka’s law analyses were evaluated. A total of 895 publications involving 2,653 authors and published in 322 journals were analyzed. The average citation per document was 50.07, and the international collaboration rate was 18.77%. VOSviewer analyses demonstrated that the literature mainly clustered around pain neurobiology, spinal cord pathways, neuropathic pain, and neuroimaging themes. Overlay visualization identified diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), diffusion tensor tractography, and central poststroke pain as emerging research areas. Country collaboration analysis revealed that the United States occupied a central position, while South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia showed strong collaborative networks. Overlay analysis further indicated increasing contributions from South Korea, Iran, and Switzerland. Spinothalamic tract research remained an active and evolving field between 2000 and 2024. Recent studies have increasingly focused on DTI, tractography, and neuromodulation, reflecting a shift toward advanced neuroimaging and translational neuroscience. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific development of spinothalamic tract research and may guide future investigations. May greatly facilitate the understanding of complex neural pathways and provide scientifically meaningful contributions to medical education.
