Makerspace structures with their cultural dimensions: The role of libraries

Yıl 2020, Sayı: 6, 52 - 71, 31.12.2020

Öz

Makerspaces, which are areas where people come together to produce and to explore their interests through various related tools, also gain new knowledge and experiences in these processes, are the product of the DIY (Do-it-yourself) philosophy. These areas provide people with a basis for the acquisition of many skills such as inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication and collaboration, which are defined as twenty-first century skills. The sum of the aforementioned processes has also developed a unique cultural structure. This cultural fabric evokes, to some extent, the third space paradigm developed by the US urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg. Cultural elements such as egalitarianism, participation, sense of belonging, collaboration, friendship, conversation/chat, sharing and solidarity, which are among the dynamics related to the cultural structure of makerspaces and the maker movement, are also the qualities of the third place. Due to the fact that libraries, no matter what kind they are, which aim to support educational and cultural development of the society are suitable for makerspaces in terms of having the common vision with them, libraries have started to give more place makerspaces in their facilities, in both world and Turkey. The purpose of this study is to draw a theoretical framework regarding makerspace, maker and related concepts especially with their cultural dimensions, to point out the importance of the topic, and to examine the role of libraries in this context. Within the scope of this study, which is a descriptive research and prepared on the basis of domestic and foreign literature review related to the subject, firstly basic concepts were explained. Then, in order to shed some light on the background of the subject, the historical development of makerspaces was examined. After that, the cultural dimensions of makerspaces were discussed. In the next part of the study, the importance and place of makerspaces for libraries were questioned. Finally, the study was completed with the conclusion section including some suggestions.
