POPULISM OR RADICALISM?

Öz

This article examines the concept of populism within the framework of political science, both at a theoretical level and through practical examples. The concept is analyzed in terms of its definition, main characteristics, and boundaries, while explaining the relationship between populism and radicalism by positioning populism as a derivative of politics. The conceptual framework of the article is established through the state–power–society relationship. In this context, it is argued that the state, which has historically existed not for the people but largely for itself, seeks to control social forces both through coercion and by employing ideological mechanisms. It is suggested that Gramsci’s concept of “consent” and Foucault’s idea of “power as the production of knowledge” are particularly explanatory for non-democratic and hybrid regimes, but cannot be applied to democratic ones. The distinction between auctoritas (the principle of authority) and potestas (the exercise of power) is examined together with Montesquieu’s principle of separation of powers, in order to evaluate the social and political impacts of populist leaders in democratic and anti-democratic systems.
