Abstract
Object: This study was conducted to evaluate neuropathic pain, pain beliefs and pain coping styles experienced by individuals with Type II diabetes, and to examine the relationship between these variables.
Methods: This study was conducted with 245 Type II diabetic patients in the Internal Medicine Clinics and Polyclinics of a hospital. Personal Information Form, Pain Quality Assessment Scale, Pain Beliefs Scale and Pain Coping Scale were used to collect data.
Results: 36.7% of the participants had neuropathy due to diabetes. The average duration of diabetes diagnosis was 8.09±4.28 years. The participants' pain quality assessment scale sub-dimension mean scores were 3.35±2.06 for proximal pain, 3.13±2.07 for superficial pain, and 4.05±2.2 for deep pain. The participants' pain belief scale sub-dimension mean scores were 3.22±0.71 for organic beliefs and 2.65±0.98 for psychological beliefs. The pain coping scale sub-dimension mean scores were 29.49±6.84 for self-coping, 20.70±5.06 for helplessness, 19.71±3.94 for conscious cognitive interventions, and 19.82±4.29 for seeking medical help. A statistically significant relationship was found between the pain quality, pain beliefs, and pain coping sub-dimensions (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was determined that the participants experienced deep pain the most, their pain was mostly based on organic beliefs, and helplessness was the most. It has been determined that the pain experienced and beliefs affect coping styles.
