Öz

Arthur Asa Berger, who is a professor in the department of broadcast and electronic communication arts (BECA) at San Francisco State University and also known to the readers in Turkey for his cultural and mass communication theories, presented the outlines of classical social theory in his book “Durkheim is Dead! Sherlock Holmes is Introduced to Social Theory”. Berger, who teaches courses on writing and media criticism, as stated in the author's notes section of his book; aims to clarify the scope of the theories of the important names of social theory in the 19th and 20th centuries by showing how they explained people's social behavior through an example, and therefore, to put the issue in a concrete framework for those interested in classical social theory. In short terms, the author, who puts forward a main idea about the importance of problem-oriented thinking rather than theory-oriented thinking in order for sociology to function, tries to demonstrate this idea both through the name of the book and the Durkheim character's statements that social theorists' theories that can gain meaning by being adapted to social reality.

San Francisco Eyalet Üniversitesi’nde yayın ve elektronik iletişim sanatları departmanında profesörlük yapan ve Türkiye’deki okurun da kültür ve kitle iletişimi teorilerinden bildiği Arthur Asa Berger, Durkheim Öldü! Sherlock Holmes Sosyal Teoriye Giriyor adlı kitabıyla klasik sosyal teorinin ana hatlarını sunmuştur. Yazarlık ve medya eleştirisi üzerine dersler veren Berger kitabındaki yazarın notu bölümünde de belirttiği üzere; sosyal teorinin 19. ve 20. yüzyıllardaki önemli isimlerinin insanların sosyal davranışını nasıl açıkladıklarını örnek bir olay üzerinden göstererek teorilerinin kapsamını açıklığa kavuşturmayı ve dolayısıyla klasik sosyal teoriye ilgi duyanlar için meseleyi somut bir çerçeveye oturtmayı amaçlamıştır. Kısacası sosyolojinin işleyebilmesi için teori güdümlü düşünmektense sorun güdümlü düşünmenin önemine dair ana fikir ortaya atan yazar, bu fikri hem kitabın adı hem de Durkheim karakterinin sosyal teorisyenlerin teorilerinin toplumsal gerçekliğe uyarlanarak anlam kazanabileceğine yönelik ifadeleri vasıtasıyla göstermeye çalışmıştır.
