Master of Light Arkhip Kuindzhi’s Contributions to Luminism, Philosophical Aesthetics, Art Pedagogy, and Regional Cultural Identity

Öz

This study provides a systematic examination of the multifaceted legacy of Russian landscape painter Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi (1842–1910), extending beyond his established contributions to luminist technique to investigate lesser-explored dimensions of his pedagogical practice, interdisciplinary links to music, and long-term cultural influence. Employing a mixed-methods approach that integrates historical analysis, visual comparison, and philosophical contextualization, the research demonstrates that Kuindzhi’s teaching methodology at the Imperial Academy of Arts—characterized by emphasis on individual creativity, direct empirical observation of nature, and experimental manipulation of light and color—was informed by his autodidactic origins and exerted direct impact on subsequent generations of artists, including Isaac Levitan, Konstantin Bogaevsky, and Nicholas Roerich. Kuindzhi’s aesthetic is situated within broader European art-historical trajectories, revealing structural affinities between his luminist procedures and principles evident in Renaissance atmospheric modeling, Baroque chiaroscuro dramaturgy, and Romantic sublimity. Philosophical parallels are drawn with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s subjective theory of color, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s dialectical conception of artistic progression, and Arthur Schopenhauer’s notion of will-less contemplation. Additionally, culturological perspectives highlight Kuindzhi’s role in articulating regional identity through philanthropy and thematic focus on Mariupol landscapes. The analysis underscores his position as a transitional figure bridging late nineteenth-century realism with modernist subjectivity, while identifying implications for contemporary art education, sensory design, and cultural heritage preservation.
