SCHUMPETER’İN BÜYÜK BOŞLUK TEORİSİ: HELENİSTİK ARİSTOTELESÇİLİKTEN İSLAM EKONOMİSİNE

Öz

Çağdaş ekonomi, Avrupa Skolastisizminin Helenistik Aristotelesçilik dönem ekonomisini yeniden canlandırmasına atfedilmiştir. Aziz Thomas Aquinas'ın (1225–1274) Summa Theologica adlı eseri, bu sürekliliğin öncüsü olarak kabul edilmektedir. Summa Theologica, şüphesiz, gerçeğin doğası üzerine yazılmış parlak bir eser olarak kabul edilmektedir. Summa Theologica, Platon, Augustine ve Avicenna (İbn Sina) eserlerine atıfta bulunmaktadır. Joseph Schumpeter'in Büyük Boşluk tezi, ortaçağ İslam bilginlerinin ekonomi konularına herhangi bir katkıda bulunmadığını öne sürmektedir. Schumpeter, Helenistik dönem sonrası ekonomik düşüncenin yeniden canlanmasının 14. yüzyıl Hıristiyan Avrupa Rönesansı sırasında gerçekleştiğini öne sürmektedir. İslam'ın altın çağı, Al Farabi (873-950), İbn Sina (980-1037), Al-Ghazali (1058-1111) ve İbn Haldun (1364-1442) gibi ortaçağ İslam alimlerinin eserlerini ön plana çıkarır. Bu İslam alimleri, Platon'un Cumhuriyet (MÖ 375) gibi Helenistik söylemleri derinlemesine analiz ettikten sonra devlet ekonomi teorilerinin temellerini attılar. Schumpeter'in varsayımı, Doğu ve Batı'daki akademisyenler tarafından sorgulanmıştır. Will Durant, 1950 tarihli İnanç Çağı adlı eserinde, Batı akademisinin Helenistik ekonomi, ortaçağ İslam akademisi, Rönesans skolastisizmi ve çağdaş İslam ekonomi düşüncesi arasındaki bağlantıları kabul etmekte isteksiz olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Schumpeter'in Orta Çağ İslam alimlerinin çağdaş ekonomi ve İslam ekonomi düşüncesine katkısının olmadığına dair Büyük Boşluk tezinin varsayımları, Joseph Spengler, Todd Lowry, Ghazanfar ve Islahi gibi akademisyenler tarafından başarıyla tartışılmıştır. Baqir Al Sadr'ın 1961 tarihli eseri Iqtisaduna, İslam ekonomi düşüncesi bağlamında ekonominin belki de en kapsamlı karşılaştırmalı çalışmalarından biridir. Al Sadr'ın eseri, 1970'lerde Arap İslam dünyasında, özellikle Kuveyt ve ötesinde, Al-Bank Al Rabbawi Fil Islam adlı çığır açıcı eseriyle modern İslam bankacılığına öncülük etmiştir. Türk akademisyen Sabri Orman, 1981 yılında Al Khaldun'un sosyal adalet teorisi üzerine çığır açıcı tezini yazmıştır. Orman'ın eseri, Türkiye'de İslami finansın önünü açmıştır. Bu makale, Al Sadr ve Orman'ın eserlerini dikkate alarak, Helenistik ekonomiden çağdaş ekonomi düşüncesine geçişi ele alan İslami ekonomi düşüncesi söylemini incelemektedir.

SCHUMPETER’S GREAT GAP THEORY: HELLENISTIC ARISTOTELIANISM TO ISLAMIC ECONOMICS

Öz

Contemporary economics has been attributed to European Scholasticism’s revival of Hellenistic Aristotelianism period economics. Saint Thomas Aquinas's (1225–1274) work Summa Theologica is postulated as the precursor in this continuum. Summa Theologica is beyond a doubt, established as a brilliant work on the nature of truth. Summa Theologica referenced the works of Plato, Augustine, and Avicenna (Ibn Sina). The Great Gap thesis of Joseph Schumpeter precludes any contributions by medieval Islamic scholarship on the topics of economics. Schumpeter suggests that the revival of economic thought post-Hellenistic period was revived during the 14th-century Christian European Renaissance. The golden age of Islam beacons the works of Islamic medieval scholars like Al Farabi (873-950 AD), Ibn Sina (980-1037 AD), Al-Ghazali (1058-1111 AD), and Ibn Khaldun (1364-1442 AD), etc. These Islamic scholars built the foundation of state economic theories, after thoroughly analyzing the Hellenistic discourse such as Plato’s Republic (375 BC). Schumpeter’s postulation has been challenged by scholars in the East and the West. Will Durant in his 1950 work titled The Age of Faith; sheds light on Western scholarship’s reluctance to acknowledge links between Hellenistic economics, medieval Islamic scholarship, renaissance scholasticism, and contemporary Islamic economic thought. Schumpeter’s Great Gap thesis assumptions about the absence of medieval Islamic scholarship’s contributions to contemporary economics and Islamic economic thought have been argued successfully by scholars like Joseph Spengler, Todd Lowry, Ghazanfar, and Islahi. Baqir Al Sadr’s 1961 work Iqtisaduna is perhaps one of the most comprehensive comparative studies of economics within the context of Islamic economic thought. Al Sadr’s work led the way in the 1970s for modern Islamic banking in the Arab Islamic world, especially Kuwait and beyond through his seminal work titled, Al-Bank Al Rabbawi Fil Islam. Turk scholar Sabri Orman wrote his seminal thesis on Al Khaldun’s theory of social justice in 1981. Orman’s work paved the way for Islamic Finance in Türkiye. This paper aims to study the Islamic economic thought discourse on bridging the gap from Hellenistic economics to contemporary economic thought considering Al Sadr and Orman’s work.
