Is the epichoric Name of Side Deciphered?

Abstract

The epichoric name of the Pamphylian town does not correspond to the Greek one, as suggested since 1950, and the postulated Luwian ethnicon suffix and ending are not tenable. The name is therefore unknown, until a substantial progress in the decipherment of the Sidetic script is achieved. Before that, it can be said that it is probably attested in the genitive singular, and that -is may correspond to Lycian -ih(e), an ending of toponyms, attested nearly exclusively on coins.

Side’nin Epikhorik İsmi Çözüldü mü?

Öz

Pamphylia’da yer alan Side Kenti’nin epikhorik ismi 1950 yılından beri kabul gördüğü gibi bilinen Yunanca ismiyle özleşmemektedir. Bununla beraber kent isminin sonekinin Luvice ethnikon ekini yansıttığı varsayımı asılsızdır. Böylece kentin adı Side Alfabesi’nde ilerleme kaydedilmedikçe meçhul kalacaktır. Şu anki bilgi birikimiyle kentin yerel adının olasılıkla genitivus singular haliyle belgelendiği ve -is çekim ekinin Likçe’de -ih(e) soneki ile uyum gösterdiği ve neredeyse tümüyle sikkeler üzerinde yer ismi eki olarak karşımıza çıktığı söylenebilir.

Ist der epichorische Name der Stadt Side entziffert?

Öz

Seit 1950 wird angenommen, daß der einheimische Name der pamphylischen Stadt Side ihrem griechischen entspricht, was zu dem Ansatz entsprechender Lautwerte und zuletzt auch dem Postulat eines luwischen Ethnikonsuffixes und einer luwischen Endung führte. All das ist fragwürdig und hinderlich für einen echten Fortschritt in der Bestimmung der Lautwerte des sidetischen Alphabets und des Charakters der sidetischen Sprache. Vorläufig ist nur wahrscheinlich, daß dieser unbekannte Name im Genitiv Singular belegt ist und daß die Endung -is dem lykischen -ih(e) entsprechen könnte, einer Ortsnamenendung, die fast nur auf Münzen erscheint.
