An Early Hellenistic Hoard of Gold Staters in the Museum of Uşak

Abstract

The article presents nine early Hellenistic gold staters from a hoard find preserved in the Uşak Museum since 1992. The coins of Alexander III (nos. 1–2) were minted in Side and Babylon, while the remaining coins were struck in Amphipolis, Pella, Abydos, Lampsakos and probably Teos in the name of Philippos. Except for the highly corroded coin no. 6, the others are in good condition. Two symbols depicted on its reverse can be identified as a spearhead and a palm branch with taenia. This rare coin type was probably produced between 323 and 319 in a royal mint in western Asia Minor, most likely in Teos. The authors suggest that the hoard was buried at the end of the 4th or the beginning of the 3rd century BC.

Ein frühhellenistischer Schatzfund mit Goldstateren im Museum von Uşak

Öz

Vorgestellt werden neun frühhellenistische Goldstatere aus einem Schatzfund, die seit 1992 zum Bestand des Museums Uşak gehören. Die Alexandriner (Nr. 1–2) wurden in Side und Babylon, der Philippeier hingegen in Amphipolis, Pella, Abydos, Lampsakos und wahrscheinlich Teos geprägt. Während die Mehrzahl der Münzen nahezu neuwertig ist, weist der Stater Nr. 6 starke Abnutzungsspuren auf. Die beiden auf dessen Revers abgebildeten Beizeichen lassen sich als Speerspitze und Palmzweig mit Taenie identifizieren. Diese seltene Münzserie wurde wahrscheinlich zwischen 323 und 319 in einer westkleinasiatischen Münzstätte, am ehesten in Teos, geprägt. Vergraben wurde der Hort wahrscheinlich am Ende des 4. oder zu Beginn des 3. Jahrhunderts v. Chr.

Uşak Müzesi Erken Hellenistik Dönem Altın Stater Definesi

Öz

Makale 1992 yılından beri Uşak Müzesi’nde korunan bir define buluntusuna ait dokuz adet erken Hellenistik altın stateri tanıtmaktadır. 1–2 nolu sikkeler III. Aleksandros adına Side ve Babil’de, diğerleri ise Philippos Arrhidaios adına Amphipolis, Pella, Abydos, Lampsakos ve muhtemelen Teos’ta darp edilmiştir. Bir hayli aşınmış 6 nolu sikke dışında diğerleri iyi durumdadır. Bu sikkenin arka yüzünde tasvir edilen iki sembol mızrak ucu ve kurdeleli palmiye dalı olarak tanımlanmıştır. Nadir belgelenmiş bu sikke serisi muhtemelen 323 ile 319 yılları arasında Küçük Asya’da bir darphanede, büyük ihtimalle Teos’ta basılmıştır. Yazarlar definenin MÖ 4. yüzyılın sonu ya da 3. yüzyılın başında gömüldüğünü düşünmektedir.
