Contrascriptores im römischen Zollwesen

Many offices of the subordinate custom duties personnel are known by name, even though very little can be said about their actual function or social status. The present paper inves­ti­gates on the so-called contrascriptores. In research the abbreviation is commonly read as contra­scrip­tor, however it could also be read as contrascriba. Writing was part of the employees’ duties, never­theless the exact nature of their assignment still remains uncertain. Considering the overall system of customs duties, each protractor received a certified document in the tollhouse, therefore there must have been a scribe present in every custom post. The denomination contrascriptor (scrip­tores or scribae are not attested in tollhouse-inscriptions) strongly suggests that writing was essential to their remits. Due to an above-average qualification the contrascriptor belonged to an occupa­tio­nal group of high esteem and salary. Thus his social standing was remarkably high and enabled him to set up expensive inscriptions.

Roma Gümrük Sisteminde Contrascriptores

Öz

Gümrüğün toplanmasını sağlayan alt kademe personelin birçok makamı, bunların asal görevleri ya da sos­­yal statüleri hakkında çok az şey söylenebilse de, ismen bilinmektedir. Yazar makalesinde contra­scrip­to­res olarak bilinen gümrük görevlilerini incelemektedir. Modern araştırmalarda kısaltma genellikle con­tra­­scriptor şeklinde anlaşılmaktadır. Bununla birlikte söz konusu kısaltmanın contrascriba şeklinde okun­ması da mümkündür. Yazma, bu personelin görevlerinin bir kısmını oluştursa da sorumluluk saha­larının tam içeriği hala belirsiz kalmaktadır. Gümrük prosedürleri göz önüne alın­­dığında, her bir pro­tractor’un gümrük istasyonunda onaylı bir belge almaktaydı. Dolayısıyla her güm­rük noktasında bir yaz­manın bulunması zorunluydu. Contrascriptor adlandırması (gümrük binası yazıt­­larında scriptores veya scribae belgelenmemiştir) görevlerinin temelde yazıyla ilgili olduğunu güçlü bir şekilde düşün­dür­mek­tedir. Ortalamanın üzerinde bir yetkinliğe sahip olması gerektiğinden contra­scrip­tor görece saygın ve yüksek ücretli bir meslek grubuna aitti. Bu nedenle sosyal itibarı yüksekti ve bu du­rum onun olduk­ça masraflı yazıtlar diktirebilmesini de olanaklı kılıyordu.
