New Inscriptions from the Middle Hermos

Abstract

The author publishes eight inscriptions from the region of Kula in the Middle Hermos valley, seven of them previously unknown. Two inscriptions derive from the modern town of Kula itself: an epitaph dating to the late first century BC (no. 1) and a dedication, probably to Meis Axiottenos, set up by a pragmateutēs (no. 2). There then follow five inscriptions from the modern village of Ayazören (ancient Iaza): a fragmentary funerary stēlē (no. 3); a funerary stēlē with accompanying relief, previously published, with several incorrect readings, by Christian Naour (no. 4); another fragmentary funerary stēlē (no. 5); a lengthy epitaph describing a large extended family (no. 6); and an epitaph including several idiosyncratic formulae (no. 7). Finally, a doorstone from modern Şehitlioğlu (ancient Thermai Theseos) appears to be a pierre errante; it almost certainly derives from the territory of Phrygian Akmoneia.

Orta Hermos Vadisi’nden Yeni Yazıtlar

Öz

Yazar makalesinde Orta Hermos Vadisi’nde yer alan Kula Bölgesi’nden yedisi daha önce yayımsız toplam sekiz yazıt yayımlamaktadır. İlk iki yazıt Kula İlçesi’nde bulunmuştur: İÖ Geç 1. yüzyıla tarihlenen bir mezar epigramı (no. 1) ile bir pragmateutēs tarafından Meis Aksiottenos için dikilmiş bir adak yazıtı (no. 2). Sonraki beş yazıt Ayazören (antik Iaza) köyünde bulunmuştur: bir mezar steli fragmanı (no. 3); pek çok yanlış okumayla daha önce Christian Naour tarafından yayımlanmış kabartmalı bir mezar steli (no. 4); bir diğer mezar steli fragmanı (no. 5); geniş bir aileyi tanımlayan uzun bir epitaph (no. 6) ve bir takım özgün formülasyonlar içeren bir diğer epitaph (no. 7). Son olarak Şehitlioğlu’nda (antik Thermai Theseos) bulunmuş bir eşik taşı pierre errante (gezgin taş) olarak değerlendirilmekte ve kökeninin neredeyse kesin bir şekilde Phrygia yerleşimi Akmoneia olduğu düşünülmektedir.
