Ardanuç county is on the eastern side of Artvin city, the castle of Ardanuç is a unique historical monument of the entire area. The castle was built in BC and used for administration by many kingdoms. The area was conquered by the governor İskender Pasha in 1551. The castle of Ardanuç was repaired in 1562 and marked by an epigraph. The district of Artvin was in the hegemony of the Ottoman Empire for 250 years until the Russian invasion with the Brest-Litovsk agreement, the district of Artvin was surrendered to the empire. The building stone of the castle walls are mainly of Ziyarettepe formation from Paleocene age. Also the detrital material from the neighbourhood such as Mekanet, Karlı, Avcılar and Çiseltakaya were used in the lining of the walls’ mortar and the plaster
