E. E. VIOLLET LE DUC , THE STYLE UNITY AND THE LINE OF THOUGHT OF REINSTATEMENT AND RECONSTRUCTION

The philosophy of restoration is the synthesis of Style unity and reconstructions with the anti-restoration and conservation movement leaded by John Ruskin. E.E. Viollet Le Duc as a self educated architect, archeologist and art historian, was the protagonist of the restoration and the style unity philosophy. Style unity was based on the cleaning of the historic layers and the repairs, and reinstating the buildings with the original design concept. It was politically and religiously supplemented with national pride and Christian prosperity. The sacred architectural style was the Medieval Gothic; E.E. Viollet Le Duc was also a French Neo-Gothic architect and designer of the new buildings. His success which is discussed today encouraged other restoration architects in the Continental Europe, in the United States and even in Turkey. His followers exceeded him in hypothetic reintegrations and reconstructions. However his work was criticized by his contemporary architects and even by himself. We can always detect the contradiction of the theory and implementations in style unity architects works.The assiduous critics of the anti-restorations movement in Europe resulted in the revision of the restoration theory and creation of the “philological restoration” and ”historical restoration” theories in Italy .These two related restoration understanding although they were slightly different from the French line of thought of restoration initiated the first systematical principles of modern restoration philosophy.This article intends to enlighten the beginners on the origins of the reinstatement and reconstruction philosophy in restorations and its’ conflict with the modern principles and concepts
