The Role and Use of Ethos in Advertising
Öz
Rhetoric is a deep-rooted art extending from Antiquity to the present as the art of persuading the audience. Among the persuasive proofs—ethos, pathos, and logos—systematized by Aristotle in his work Rhetoric, ethos stands out as the most fundamental element based on the credibility, character, and prestige of the speaker or source. Ethos, the focal point of this study, originates from the Greek word meaning character and disposition, and is defined today as the “credibility of the source”. This study examines in detail the strategic importance and use of the concept of “ethos”, one of the fundamental persuasion methods of Aristotle’s rhetorical theory, within the advertising industry. Focusing on the function of advertisements beyond mere product promotion—specifically their role in shaping consumer opinions and building trust—the article analyzes the decisive role of the source’s (the brand or the figure in the advertisement) ethos in this process. Furthermore, by touching upon the historical development of rhetoric from Antiquity to the present, it emphasizes that rhetoric is an indispensable tool in modern advertising as an era of visual and linguistic imagery. The study aims to explain how ethos facilitates a transfer of trust in advertisements through concrete examples. In particular, it addresses how brands persuade target audiences through strategies such as the use of celebrities, corporate image building, and user experience. Stating that advertisements draw intense inspiration from the rhetorical methods of persuasion (ethos, pathos, and logos), the study expresses that why certain advertising campaigns are memorable and effective can be understood through these methods. In this context, the strategic value of ethos in advertisements is examined, and its place and use in practice are revealed through examples selected from different sectors. In the article, a qualitative analysis method has been adopted, based primarily on ethos among the persuasion methods shaped within the framework of Aristotle’s rhetorical theory. In the first stage, the historical development of rhetoric and the theoretical background of the concept of ethos were grounded through a literature review, and subsequently, this theoretical framework was adapted to contemporary advertising strategies. Methodologically, a logical analysis has been presented through seven sample advertisements from brands such as Reeder, Turkish Airlines, and Beypazarı Maden Suyu. During this analysis process, how non-linguistic and linguistic elements (slogans, brand ambassadors, etc.) build trust in the interlocutor and the mechanisms of persuasion are detailed. Consequently, it is stated that ethos is not just an element of trust in advertising strategies but also a fundamental proof that builds the identity of the brand. In today's information age, the fact that consumers question the credibility of the message source before rational benefits or emotional excitement makes ethos the starting point of the persuasion process. Ethos, representing the “character” of brands in the eyes of the target audience, prepares the ground for a long-term loyalty relationship. It is emphasized that in the digitalizing world of advertising, user comments and interaction rates also create a collective ethos, and it is vital for brands to adhere to the principles of transparency and consistency. The article confirms that the principles of rhetoric inherited from the ancient period maintain their validity even in the era of artificial intelligence and personalized advertising, and that the success of future advertising strategies will depend on the ability to construct a sincere and competent ethos that addresses the ancient human need to “trust”. Ethos is not only the visible face of the advertisement but also the most fundamental indicator of its social and ethical legitimacy.
