A Rare Case of Pneumonia Caused by Shewaneella algea

Abstract

Shewanella species are facultative anaerobic, non-fermentative, motile, saprophytic gram-negative bacilli and are considered as human pathogens. Shewanella species, which are common in nature, can be isolated from all kinds of water-related environments, although they are mostly in the marine environment. The increase in Shewanella species in recent years and the emergence of common pathogens all over the world attracted the attention of the medical community. It has been shown that Shewanella species cause many community and hospital-acquired infections, especially skin and soft tissue infections. Shewanella spp. Although patients infected with TB may also experience occupational or recreational exposure, the infection process is highly complex and pathogenicity is affected by a variety of factors. Shewanella spp. The presentation of infections caused by this bacterium as a case is very important in terms of the epidemiology, pathogenicity, identification and treatment of diseases caused by this bacterium. Therefore, as a case report; It is aimed to share a pneumonia case with Shewanella algae growth in sputum culture, who applied to the chest diseases outpatient clinic with the complaints of mild fever, shortness of breath, cough and sputum production.

Shewaneella algeaya’ya Bağlı Gelişen Nadir Saptanan Pnömoni Olgusu

Öz

Shewanella türleri fakültatif anaerob, fermantatif olmayan, hareketli, saprofitik gram negatif basiller olup insan patojeni olarak da kabul edilmektedir. Doğada yaygın olarak bulunan Shewanella türleri, çoğunlukla deniz ortamında olmakla beraber her türlü su ilişkili ortamlardan da izole edilebilmektedir. Shewanella türleri son yıllarda artış gösterip tüm dünyada yaygın patojen ortaya çıkması tıp camiasının dikkatini çekti. Shewanella türlerinin başta deri ve yumuşak doku enfeksiyonları olmak üzere çok sayıda toplum ve hastane kaynaklı enfeksiyona neden olduğu gösterilmiştir. Shewanella spp. ile enfekte hastalar da mesleki veya eğlence amaçlı maruz kalma deneyimleri olsa da enfeksiyon süreci son derece karmaşık olduğu kadar, patojenite de çeşitli faktörlerden etkilenir. Shewanella spp. ile oluşan enfeksiyonların olgu olarak sunulması bu bakterinin neden olduğu hastalıkların epidemiyolojisi, patojenitesi, identifikasyonu ve tedavisi açısından oldukça önemlidir. Bu nedenle olgu sunumu olarak; hafif ateş, nefes darlığı, öksürük ve balgam çıkarma şikayeti ile göğüs hastalıkları polikliniğine başvuran ve balgam kültüründe Shewanella algae üreyen bir pnömoni vakasının paylaşılması amaçlanmıştır.
