This paper deals with an analysis of the coverage of the then Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdoğan’s visit to Austria and his speech in Vienna in June 2014. It asks how Austrian quality press two daily newspapers covers Erdoğan’s visit and speech and how far the old image of the Oriental Muslim despot – as still used in the far right narrative of Islamofascism – operates in this coverage. In doing so we aim to deconstruct the orientalist and Islamophobic narrative about Turkey and Erdoğan in the Austrian media, which we think also had an impact on the coverage of Turkey in the years to come, especially during and after the coup attempt on 15 July 2016. The articles are analyzed with the methods of the Viennese School of Critical Discourse Analysis
