The Christchurch attacks have underlined the fatal consequences of certain types of discourses and their role in fueling extremism and providing the means of lethal propaganda. European and Weste countries have recently witnessed an increase in Islamophobic hate speech, under the umbrella of freedom of speech that has been instrumentalized at times, thus sparking off a discussion on this freedom and on “European values” in a broader sense at several points. Will the defamation of Muslims, their misrepresentation and the incitement against them continue on the pretext of freedom of speech, even after the potential outcomes in the form of successive attacks, such as Christchurch, have been revealed to the world? Are the legal measures and both domestic and international legislation sufficient to keep the contempt and propagation of racism, including the hate speech targeting Muslims, contained?
