Iran during the era of Pezeshkian: An assessment of the first months of his presidency

Öz

The senior politician and heart surgeon Masoud Pezeshkian became Iran's new president through an unexpected outcome in the elections held after Ebrahim Raisi's sudden death. Known for his reformist identity, this amiable politician's rise to the constitutionally second-highest office in the country has been claimed to signal the beginning of a new era of openness in Iran. In a short time, Pezeshkian has softened Iran's political atmosphere and raised the expectations of the Iranian people through his actions. However, there are significant obstacles tying Pezeshkian’s hands and delaying the realization of his proposed political agenda, chief among them being the ongoing conflict in the region. This study examines Pezeshkian's political actions, goals, and the challenges to his political program between July 28, when he assumed the presidency, and November 20. By analyzing political discourse and actions through media and official channels, this article discusses Pezeshkian’s political report card, offering insights into his performance and the broader political dynamics.

إيران في عهد پزشكيان: تقييم الأشهر الأولى من رئاسته

مسعود پزشكيان، سياسي مخضرم وجراح قلب، أصبح رئيس إيران الجديد بنتيجة غير متوقعة في الانتخابات التي جرت عقب الوفاة المفاجئة لإبراهيم رئيسي. وعُدَّ تولّي هذا السياسي المعروف بميوله الإصلاحية ثاني أعلى منصب دستوري في البلاد- مؤشرًا على بداية حقبة جديدة من الانفتاح في إيران. خلال فترة وجيزة، نجح پزشكيان في تخفيف حدة الأجواء السياسية في إيران ورفع توقعات الشعب الإيراني. ومع ذلك، يواجه برنامجه السياسي عقبات خطيرة تعوق تنفيذه؛ أبرزها استمرار حالة الصراع في المنطقة. تحلّل هذه الدراسة الأنشطة السياسية التي قام بها پزشكيان، وأهدافه، والعقبات أمام برنامجه السياسي خلال الفترة الممتدة من توليه المنصب في 28 يوليو حتى 20 نوفمبر 2024م. يستعرض البحث أداء پزشكيان السياسي من خلال متابعة وتحليل الخطابات والحراكات السياسية للفاعلين عبر وسائل الإعلام والقنوات الرسمية.
