Examination of Nurses' Knowledge Levels About Cardiac Rehabilitation

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 3, 10 - 22, 31.12.2025

Purpose: Cardiac rehabilitation programs for individuals with cardiovascular disease are evidence-based, multidisciplinary healthcare models that aim to minimise the physiological and psychological effects of the disease. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge levels of nurses working in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and physical therapy and rehabilitation clinics regarding cardiac rehabilitation.
Material and Methods: The descriptive type includes 113 nurses working in the Cardiology Service, Cardiovascular Surgery Service, Coronary Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Cardiovascular Surgery ICU, and Physical Therapy clinics. Data were collected using a 30-item Cardiac Rehabilitation Knowledge Form developed by the researchers. Each correct answer was scored as 1 point, "I don't know" answers were scored as 0 points, and incorrect answers were scored as 0 points. Total scores were evaluated as follows: "1-10 points: uninformed; 11-20 points: moderately informed; 21-30 points: highly informed." For the statistical analysis of the data, the Independent Sample T-test and the One-Way ANOVA test were used to compare more than two variables.
Results: The nurses' score on the cardiac rehabilitation knowledge questionnaire was 19.71±8.79 indicating that they were partially knowledgeable. In terms of the unit where cardiac rehabilitation was performed, nurses working in the Coronary Care Unit were found to be more knowledgeable than nurses working in the physical therapy unit [F=4.193; p<0.05]; nurses who received training on cardiac rehabilitation were found to be more knowledgeable than those who did not [t=4.615; p<0.05]. No significant difference was found based on the length of service in the units. In contrast, the lowest score was obtained in the knowledge level regarding the role of nurses in referring patients to cardiac rehabilitation.
Conclusion: The study found that nurses working in relevant departments had partial knowledge of cardiac rehabilitation. It was determined that nurses working in the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital had a greater need for training.
