The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Nursing Students’ Career Choices and Attitudes Toward the Nursing Profession: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Aim: The challenges nurses faced during the pandemic may have influenced nursing students' choices and attitudes toward the profession. This descriptive-comparative study compared the choices and attitudes toward the nursing profession of students who chose nursing profession before and during the pandemic.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted at a university during the spring semester of the 2021–2022 academic year. Participants (n=365) included 201 students who chose the profession during the pandemic and 164 who chose it before the pandemic. Data were collected using the Nursing Student Data Collection Form developed by the researchers and the Attitude Scale for the Nursing Profession. Descriptive and comparative statistics were used in data analysis.
Results: This study found that students who chose the nursing profession during the pandemic demonstrated more positive attitudes toward the field than those who chose it before the pandemic. Key factors influencing their choice and attitudes included voluntarily selecting nursing, prior knowledge about the profession, and having a relative who is a nurse.
Conclusion: Understanding pandemics’ influence on the nursing profession can help develop strategies and professional precautions for future pandemics.

This study was conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. The study was approved by the Non-Interventional Clinical Research Ethics Committee of X University in Turkey (Approval No: 2021.09.03 and Date: 16.09.2021) and received permission to apply from the Ministry of Health and faculty administrators. Research and publication ethics rules were followed in this article. Participants were informed of the purpose, procedure, and confidentiality of the study, and written informed consent was obtained before participation.

COVID-19 Pandemisinin Hemşirelik Öğrencilerinin Meslek Seçimleri ve Hemşirelik Mesleğine Yönelik Tutumlarına Etkisi: Karşılaştırmalı Bir Çalışma

Abstract

Amaç: Hemşirelerin pandemi döneminde karşılaştıkları zorluklar, hemşirelik öğrencilerinin mesleki seçimlerini ve mesleğe yönelik tutumlarını etkilemiş olabilir. Bu tanımlayıcı karşılaştırmalı çalışma, pandemiden önce ve pandemi sırasında hemşirelik mesleğini seçen öğrencilerin mesleki seçimlerini ve tutumlarını karşılaştırmayı amaçlamıştır.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışma, 2021-2022 akademik yılının bahar döneminde bir üniversitede yürütülmüştür. Katılımcılar (n=365), pandemi sırasında mesleği seçen 201 öğrenci ve pandemiden önce mesleği seçen 164 öğrenciden oluşmuştur. Veriler, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen Hemşirelik Öğrencisi Veri Toplama Formu ve Hemşirelik Mesleğine Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Veri analizinde tanımlayıcı ve karşılaştırmalı istatistikler kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Bu çalışmada, pandemi sırasında hemşirelik mesleğini seçen öğrencilerin, pandemiden önce mesleği seçenlere kıyasla hemşirelik mesleğine karşı daha olumlu tutumlar gösterdiği bulunmuştur. Seçimlerini ve tutumlarını etkileyen temel faktörler hemşireliği gönüllü olarak seçmeleri, meslek hakkında önceden bilgi sahibi olmaları ve hemşire olan bir yakınlarının olmasıdır.
Sonuç: Pandemilerin hemşirelik mesleği üzerindeki etkisinin anlaşılması, gelecekteki pandemilere yönelik stratejilerin ve mesleki önlemlerin geliştirilmesine katkıda bulunabilir.
