On the Verge of Motherhood: An Examination of Pregnancy Adaptation Processes in Pregnant Women with Third-Trimester Bleeding
Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of pregnancy adaptation among women experiencing third-trimester bleeding and to identify factors associated with pregnancy adaptation.
Material and Methods: This study was conducted at a university hospital in İzmir between May and September 2019. It was designed as a cross-sectional study and included 105 participants. Data were collected using the Individual Identification Form and the Prenatal Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (PSEQ). Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 25.0. In addition to descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests were used to compare non-normally distributed variables, and the level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05.
Results: The research findings indicate that participants obtained moderate scores across different dimensions of prenatal adjustment. Accordingly, the mean scores were determined as follows: 20.95±7.25 for concern for the well-being of self and baby, 29.89±7.86 for acceptance of pregnancy, 31.51±9.18 for identification with a motherhood role, 26.65±3.57 for preparation for labor, 24.91±3.06 for fear of labor, 19.59±6.04 for relationship with mother, and 20.67±5.47 for relationship with husband.
Conclusion: In pregnant women experiencing third-trimester bleeding, it was determined that utilization of prenatal care services, higher education level, employment status, longer duration of marriage, nuclear family structure, and spousal support positively affected prenatal adjustment. In line with these findings, there is a need for more comprehensive studies to identify other determinants affecting adjustment in high-risk pregnancies.
