Attitudes of Veterinary Faculty Students Towards The One Health Approach

This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the attitudes of veterinary faculty students in Türkiye towards the One Health approach. The study population was determined by selecting a stratified sample of 230 undergraduate students from different academic years and demographic backgrounds, drawn from a total of 529 students enrolled at Sivas Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Data were collected using a three-part questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic information, One Health awareness and education, and the One Health Attitude Scale, which includes four sub-dimensions (Zoonoses, Epidemics and Early Warning, Food Safety, and Antibiotic Resistance). Responses were measured on a five-point Likert scale, and scores above 3.5 were considered to indicate a positive attitude. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0 software, including t-tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests, Pearson correlations, and multivariate logistic regression methods. The findings showed that students generally exhibited a positive attitude towards One Health, and the total scale mean was 62.22 ± 11.60. The highest mean scores among the subdimensions were observed in Epidemics and Early Warning (16.77 ± 3.25), Zoonoses (16.48 ± 3.35), and Antibiotic Resistance (16.56 ± 3.32). Correlation analyses revealed strong positive relationships between the subdimensions (r = 0.820–0.942, p < 0.01). No significant difference was found based on gender or prior knowledge of the One Health concept; however, students who had received One Health education or had relatives in the field of environmental health scored significantly lower. Year of study, was also associated with attitude differences, particularly among second and fourth-year students. The study highlights the importance of integrating One Health into the veterinary curriculum and the need for students to gain hands-on training and awareness on zoonoses, epidemics, and antibiotic resistance. The findings demonstrate that students have the potential to effectively contribute to multidisciplinary health initiatives in the future.

Veteriner Fakültesi Öğrencilerinin Tek Sağlık Yaklaşımına Yönelik Tutumları

Öz

Bu kesitsel çalışma, Türkiye'deki veteriner fakültesi öğrencilerinin Tek Sağlık yaklaşımına yönelik tutumlarını değerlendirmeyi amaçlamıştır. Çalışma popülasyonu, Sivas Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi'nde öğrenim gören 529 lisans öğrencisinden, farklı yıllardan ve demografik geçmişlerden 230 öğrencinin dahil edildiği tabakalı bir örneklem seçilerek belirlenmiştir. Veriler, sosyodemografik bilgiler, Tek Sağlık farkındalığı ve eğitimi ile dört alt boyutu (Zoonozlar, Salgınlar ve Erken Uyarı, Gıda Güvenliği ve Antibiyotik Direnci) içeren Tek Sağlık Tutum Ölçeği'nden oluşan üç bölümlü bir anket kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Yanıtlar beş puanlık Likert ölçeğinde ölçülmüş ve 3,5'in üzerindeki puanlar olumlu bir tutumu göstermiş olarak kabul edilmiştir. Veri analizi, t-testleri, Kruskal-Wallis testleri, Pearson korelasyonları ve çok değişkenli lojistik regresyon yöntemleri olmak üzere SPSS 25.0 programı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Bulgular, öğrencilerin genel olarak Tek Sağlık'a karşı olumlu tutum sergilediğini ve toplam ölçek ortalamasının 62,22 ± 11,60 olduğunu göstermiştir. Alt boyutlar arasında en yüksek ortalama puanlar Salgınlar ve Erken Uyarı (16,77 ± 3,25), Zoonozlar (16,48 ± 3,35) ve Antibiyotik Direnci (16,56 ± 3,32) alt boyutlarında gözlemlenmiştir. Korelasyon analizleri, alt boyutlar arasında güçlü pozitif ilişkiler ortaya koymuştur (r = 0,820–0,942, p < 0,01). Cinsiyet veya Tek Sağlık kavramına ilişkin önceden edinilen bilgiye bağlı olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmamıştır; buna karşılık, Tek Sağlık eğitimi almış veya çevre sağlığı alanında akrabaları olan öğrenciler anlamlı derecede daha düşük puan almıştır. Sınıf düzeyi de, özellikle ikinci ve dördüncü sınıf öğrencileri arasında, tutum farklılıklarıyla ilişkilendirilmiştir. Çalışma, Tek Sağlığın veterinerlik müfredatına entegrasyonunun önemini ve öğrencilerin zoonozlar, salgınlar ve antibiyotik direnci konularında uygulamalı eğitim ve farkındalık kazanmalarının gerekliliğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bulgular, öğrencilerin gelecekte çok disiplinli sağlık girişimlerine etkin şekilde katkıda bulunma potansiyeline sahip olduğunu göstermektedir.
