The Life and Activities of Hakīm b. Hizām

Abstract

Hakīm b. Hizām, a descendant of Beni Assad b. Abduluzzā, one of the great dynasty of the Quraysh tribe, was the nephew of Khatīce, uncle’s son and brother-in-law of the famous companion Zubeyr b. Avvām. He was two years younger than his aunt Khatīce and thirteen years older than the Prophet Muhammad. He became famous because his mother gave birth to him in the Kaaba because of her sudden pains. However, he soon began to make everybody speak about himself thanks to his mind, humility and enthusiasm, and at the age of fifteen, he had a say in the administration of Mecca. He went to Sham in the summer and to Yemen in the winter for trade and toured the fairs on the peninsula. Distributing the money he earned from trade to the poor in his people, freeing slaves, sacrificing for Allah, helping Muslims covertly during the boycott, and trying to dissuade the Quraysh from the war in the Battle of Badr were some virtues he had before he became Muslim. It was undertood that Hakīm always held in high esteen for the Prophet Muhammad during the difficult years of Mecca even if he was not a Muslim and his acceptance of Islam was made possible by the conquest of Mecca. After becoming Muslim on the day of the conquest, he joined Hunayn and received share from the spoil of the war. He subsequently moved to Medina and participated in the Prophet Muhammad’s conversations and herewith, he narrated many hadiths. During the period of Hulefā-i Rashid, he stayed in the capital Medina and took part in historical hadiths and died during Muawiyah's rule. Hakīm, who lived one hundred and twenty years in total, is an important companion because of his long life, the missions he undertook and the hadiths he witnessed.
