Aim: The aim of this study was to identify nursing students’ attitudes toward learning and determinant factors.
Materials-method: The study is of descriptive and cross-sectional design. The study sample consisted of 596 students consenting to participate in the research who were enrolled in the nursing division of a healthcare college located in western Turkey. Data were collected with a questionnaire on the students’ descriptive characteristics and the “Attitudes toward Learning Scale.” The analysis of the data was carried out using numbers and percentages, mean±standard deviation, the Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests.
Results: The mean age of the students participating in the study was 20.57±1.60 years; 72.1% were female, 96% were single and 32.9% were in the first year of nursing school. It was found that the students’ attitudes toward the nature of learning (28.96±4.25), their expectations from learning (37.42±5.96), and their attitudes toward being open to learning (41.9±7.52) were positive and high, but their anxieties about learning were also at a high level (36.68±7.13). The expectations from learning of female and single students were higher than their attitudes toward being open to learning (p<0.05). The study revealed that the expectations from learning and the openness to learning of those who were regular readers, had willingly chosen the profession of nursing and were satisfied with the profession were at a higher level (p<0.05) and their anxieties were lower.
Conclusion:It was determined that the attitudes of the participating students toward learning were positive and high, female and single students had higher expectations from learning and were more open to learning, the class the student was in had an influence on the nature of learning, and that being a regular reader, having willingly chosen the profession and being satisfied with it increased the degree of students’ expectations from learning and their openness to learning and also reduced their levels of anxiety about learning.
