Asymmetries in Life Cycle Assessment and Carbon Footprint Measurement in Green Dentistry

Öz

Climate change is one of the greatest global health threats facing humanity, and healthcare services play a role in this crisis, both as those affected and those who influence it. In this context, sustainability practices in green dentistry have gained significant momentum in recent years. However, when environmental pollution is mentioned in clinical practice, disposable materials (gloves and sterilization bags, etc.) are the first things that come to mind. However, objective data shows that the real environmental impact of dentistry is more complex and different than this perception. To go beyond the subjective perceptions of clinicians and prioritize the real environmental impact, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, which examines all processes of a product or service from material production to disposal, plays an important role. This study comprehensively addresses the conceptual, methodological, and procedural asymmetries in the use of life cycle assessment in green dentistry. By addressing these asymmetries in the literature, the study aims to contribute to the development of evidence-based ecological solutions such as teledentistry and operational appointment optimization for researchers, healthcare administrators, and policymakers.
