The Wound of the World's Children: A Bibliometric Analysis on Violence, Neglect, and Abuse

Öz

Objective: This study was conducted to raise awareness of violence, neglect, and abuse against children and to analyze bibliometrically the research on this topic. Materials and Methods: Study data were obtained by searching the Web of Science database using the keywords "child abuse" or "child neglect" or "child maltreatment" or "violence against children" or "child victimization" or "child sexual abuse" or "child physical abuse" or "child emotional abuse" or "child psychological abuse" for studies conducted between 1975 and 2026. VOSviewer software was used for data analysis and visualization. The number of publications and citations by year, the most-cited publications, and the most frequently used keywords were presented in visual maps. Findings: A total of 15,297 results were obtained from the Web of Science database using the keywords "child abuse" or "child neglect" or "child maltreatment" or "violence against children" or "child victimization" or "child sexual abuse" or "child physical abuse" or "child emotional abuse" or "child psychological abuse". Data from 10,021 studies that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Gilbert and colleagues authored the most cited publication. While the journal with the most publications was Child Abuse & Neglect, the most frequently used keyword was "child abuse". Conclusion: Numerous studies have been conducted to prevent child maltreatment. However, the number of publications in recent years has decreased despite the increase in abuse, neglect, and violence against children. The primary objective should be to protect children and prevent the normalization of violence, abuse, and neglect cases in societies.
