Examining the Digital Economy-Economic Growth Relationship in OECD Countries: A Panel Data Analysis

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 13 Sayı: 3, 163 - 182, 31.12.2024

Öz

This study purposes to examine the impact of the digital economy on economic growth. The research was conducted in 36 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries for the period 2003-2021 using the Driscoll-Kraay standard errors fixed effects estimator. Information and communication technology, mobile phone subscription, broadband subscription and internet usage were considered as digital economy indicators. The findings showed that information and communication technology, mobile phone subscription and internet usage significantly and positively affected economic growth. The impact of broadband subscription on growth turned out to be negative. In other words, the digital economy has significant effects on economic growth. These emerging effects draw an important framework for policymakers. The use of information and communication technology, creating employment opportunities in this field, ensuring equality in access to technology and increasing internet use can be expressed as important policy recommendations.
