The Evolution of Green Technology Research in Tourism: A Bibliometric Analysis (2007–2025)

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 2 Sayı: 2, 196 - 220

Öz

This study aims to evaluate the academic literature examining the relationship between green technology and tourism, revealing current research trends, thematic orientations, and patterns of international collaboration; it also seeks to identify potential areas for future research. A total of 274 studies published in the Scopus database between 2007 and 2025 were examined using bibliometric analysis methods with VOSviewer (version 1.6.20) and R Studio software. The findings show a marked increase in publications on green technology since 2022 and that this concept has become central to tourism research. It was determined that the studies were largely concentrated in Asia, with Western countries making a relatively limited contribution. The thematic focus in the literature is seen to revolve around sustainability policies, carbon neutrality, innovation efficiency, and organisational motivations. However, it was found that micro-level analyses regarding the use of green technology by hotel businesses, destinations, and tourists are limited. Consequently, it was concluded that green technologies have become a strategic element in the tourism sector not only in terms of environmental sustainability but also in terms of competitiveness, customer satisfaction, and long-term development goals. Therefore, research focusing on micro-level applications in the future is expected to make significant contributions to the literature.
