Role of Transfer Floor in Progressive Collapse Mechanisms of Reinforced Concrete Buildings under Corner Column and Shear Wall Removals

Öz

The structural complexity and higher vulnerability of the buildings with transfer floors may cause serious damages under progressive collapse. This study provides new insights into the load redistribution between elements and the nature of progressive collapse mechanisms in these types of buildings. The designed reinforced concrete structural system with transfer floor is analyzed within finite element method under corner column removal sequence. The axial force redistributions of beams, demand-capacity ratios (DCR), interaction diagrams of vertical bearing elements are examined after each removal. The distributions of arching and catenary mechanisms are discussed in a detailed way for the portions of system above and below transfer structure. During progressive collapse, the increase in DCRs is particularly higher in the first floors, while the dominant catenary action can be clearly seen below the transfer floor, the dominant arching mechanism is monitored together with tensile catenary according to the load redistribution and redundancy characteristics of the system. In the context of the findings, the wall-frame interaction, the restraining effect of outriggers and the deformational characteristics of transfer plate are found to be the main parameters which configure load redistribution and govern the progressive collapse mechanisms.
