Between Philology and Faith: Professor Tsvetan Teophanov as a Bridge between Arabic Studies and the Religious Life of Bulgarian Muslims
Öz
This article examines the intellectual and social significance of Professor Tsvetan Teophanov within the distinctive trajectory of Arabic and Islamic studies in Bulgaria. His life and scholarly work are situated within the framework of Bulgarian Orientalism, which developed in close interaction with Muslim communities rather than in colonial contexts. This illustrates how Balkan scholarship diverges from Western models. At the core of Teophanov’s legacy lies the intersection of academic authority and religious authenticity. Trained in Baghdad, Cairo, Moscow, and Oxford, he combined philological rigor with cross-cultural sensitivity, which helped secure his credibility in both academic institutions and religious circles. His Bulgarian translation of the Qur’an, endorsed and disseminated by the Chief Muftiate, represented a significant achievement by granting Muslims—particularly Pomaks—direct access to scripture in their national language after decades of restrictions on religious life. His translation of al-Nawawī’s Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn further extended his influence, embedding classical Islamic texts into the everyday practices of Bulgarian Muslims. In addition to these translations, Teophanov produced academic monographs and essays that consolidated Arabic and Islamic studies at Sofia University, contributing to the institutional foundations of the field. This study argues that his oeuvre illustrates an uncommon union of scholarship and faith, demonstrating that Bulgarian Orientalism should be understood not merely as an academic discipline but as a socially embedded intellectual tradition that continues to inform both the scholarly landscape and the lived religiosity of Bulgaria’s Muslims.
