Mutual Inductance Calculation Between HTS Spiral Tape Coils Using The Projection Method

Abstract

This study develops a numerical computational approach for calculating the mutual inductance of flat high-temperature superconducting tape pancake coils. The method extends a projection-based flux calculation originally formulated for circular cross sectional wire coils to rectangular HTS tape conductors. Instead of representing each tape turn by a single nominal-radius filament, the proposed model divides the tape width into narrow equivalent filamentary sub-layers and evaluates the mutual inductance contribution between these sectional elements. The total tape-to-tape and coil-to-coil mutual inductance values are then obtained by summing the contributions of all sub-section and turn pairs. This discretization represents the finite-width geometry of the HTS tape without assuming that the tape is physically separated into individual wires. The implementation is applied to closely wound coaxial ReBCO pancake coils, and the calculated mutual inductance values are compared with published data for superconducting pancake coils under axial separation and lateral misalignment conditions. The proposed approach provides a geometry-aware extension of the circular-wire projection method and offers a practical tool for mutual inductance estimation in flat HTS tape coil systems, with potential use in superconducting coil design, inductance-matrix construction, and SMES-related analyses.
